The place to visit for pastel lovers in Canada this summer will for sure be Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. D.F. Gray has assembled pastels from private collections from various historical Canadian master pastelists and invited 18 contemporary Canadian artists working with soft pastel along with some of his recent pastels. The show will be open July 18th through August 14th, and there will be more than a week of workshops and events. This looks like a big undertaking and I hope we’ll see more pastel events like this around the world. Thank you Dan and everyone else involved!

Paola Bassoli developed passion for painting under the watchful eye of her grandfather who was also a painter. The search for the right expression of Paola’s personality has gone through every form of art, but neither watercolor nor drawing courses have fulfilled her full expression. She finally found her expression through the portraits and figures in oil and later developed an interest in pastels and charcoal, always applying the technique of tonal painting. Paola is an active member of art scene in Milan, Italy, and she continues the study between the U.S. and Italy. The painting in this post Touareg was the finalist in The Bold Brush Painting Competition in March.
Jan Weaver’s interest in art eventually led her to get B.F.A. in studio art from the University of Texas. She pursued her love of ceramics until 2000 when she turned her focus to drawing and painting. Jan never considered herself a painter, but making art is a learned skill and she was willing to be taught. That year she saw an artist-friend’s work in pastel and she was mesmerized by the intensity of the color. Jan knew right then that this was what she wanted to learn.
Jan’s painting Watching (in this post) was the best of show at the Austin Pastel Society 2011 Annual Juried Member Exhibition held this Spring.
